The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) recorded a strong start to the financial year after surpassing its revenue collection target for July by Shs93.9 billion, reflecting improved performance in both domestic and customs tax collections.
URA’s domestic tax operations generated about Shs1.3 trillion during the month, beating the set target of Shs1.2 trillion by approximately Shs67.3 billion.

The strong domestic tax performance points to increased efforts by the authority to improve compliance and ensure that businesses and individuals meet their tax obligations accurately and within the required timelines.
Customs collections also contributed significantly to the overall performance, with URA collecting Shs853.4 billion against a target of Shs826.8 billion, resulting in a surplus of Shs26.6 billion.

The customs figures were attributed to continued monitoring of imports and enforcement of tax compliance requirements at Uganda’s borders, helping the authority strengthen revenue mobilisation from international trade.
URA was also expecting an additional Shs20 billion from government Ministries through payments relating to Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and Withholding Tax (WHT) collected from government departments.
The July performance provides an encouraging indication of the authority’s revenue mobilisation efforts as it continues implementing measures aimed at improving compliance, closing revenue gaps and expanding the tax base.
URA’s ability to exceed its monthly target by nearly Shs94 billion highlights the importance of sustained tax compliance and effective revenue administration in generating resources needed to finance government programmes and national development.
