Nabbanja Praises KCCA’s Efforts in Road Development and Waste Management Improvements
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinnah Nabbanja has commended Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for its continued efforts to improve road infrastructure and introduce better waste management systems aimed at creating a cleaner and more organised city.Nabbanja made the remarks during the Africa Public Service Day 2025 celebrations held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where she represented President Yoweri Museveni. She highlighted the importance of proper waste management, saying the government remains committed to promoting cleaner urban environments through responsible garbage disposal practices.
During a visit to the KCCA exhibition, the Prime Minister reiterated President Museveni’s call for residents to separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste to improve waste handling in Kampala. She urged city residents to embrace waste sorting and warned that mixing different types of garbage undermines efforts to maintain a clean and healthy city.In response, KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki said the Authority is strengthening waste management enforcement through a new Solid Waste Management Ordinance that will introduce penalties for improper garbage disposal.Buzeki added that KCCA plans to upgrade street waste bins by introducing dual compartments to support easier separation of different waste types. The Prime Minister also praised KCCA’s ongoing road construction and urban development projects, noting their contribution to improving mobility and transforming Kampala’s infrastructure. She highlighted the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP), which has seen more than 70 kilometres of roads undergo improvement, including Salaama, Old Portbell, Spring, Luwafu, Old Mubende, Sunna II, Kigala, and Industrial Area roads.Nabbanja further noted that Phase I of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) is progressing, with upgrades planned for 15 key roads including Kira, Katalemwa, Muganzirwazza, and Kyebando 32X.
The projects are aimed at supporting organised urban growth, improving connectivity, and enhancing service delivery within the capital city. The Africa Public Service Day 2025 celebrations, held under the theme “Empowering Marginalized Communities Through Better Governance,” provided a platform for government institutions to showcase their contributions to national development.KCCA’s exhibition featured innovations such as automated revenue systems, a digital platform for development applications that has reduced processing time from four months to four weeks, and information on road naming initiatives. The event attracted several senior government officials, including Minister of State for Public Service Grace Mary Mugasa, Dr. Diana Atwine, Maj Gen. David Kasura Kyomukama, and Aggrey Kibenge. The leaders recognised KCCA’s role in implementing urban reforms aimed at making Kampala cleaner, more efficient, and better planned.
