Kanungu Set For Improved Water Supply As Major NWSC Project Takes Shape
The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), is making progress on the Kanungu Water Supply Improvement Project, which is expected to improve access to safe and reliable water in Kihihi and surrounding communities. The project is designed to increase safe water production by at least 2 million litres per day while strengthening water transmission and storage capacity.
It will also expand the distribution network to reach more households and other important users in Kanungu District.Construction started on February 27, 2026, and is expected to run for 18 months. This will be followed by a 12-month defects liability period during which any defects arising from the works will be addressed. The project covers several major components, including the Matanda–Kihihi water supply system. This section involves developing a new spring source with a production capacity of at least 1 million litres per day, a pump station, about 13.3 kilometres of pumping main and a 200,000-litre elevated reservoir.Another major component is the Mpangango/Katete–Kihihi system, where the existing water source will be upgraded from 1 million to 2 million litres per day. The works also include a pump station, approximately 5.5 kilometres of pumping main and 12.6 kilometres of gravity main.Works are also being carried out in Kihanda, where about 7.2 kilometres of gravity pipeline will be constructed together with other supporting works. Distribution improvements are planned for Butogota, Kihanda and selected parts of the existing network.
Overall progress on the project currently stands at 33 percent, with pipework leading at 50 percent completion. About 25 kilometres of the planned 40 kilometres of pipelines have already been laid, showing steady progress on the project. The break pressure tank along the Katete–Kihihi line has also been completed, while concrete works at the Matanda spring source are ongoing. Power extensions to both the Matanda and Mpangango spring sources have been completed.
The contractor has been advised to begin and accelerate works at the Mpangango spring source to maintain progress on the project.Once completed, the project is expected to provide more reliable clean water to households, schools, health facilities, businesses and tourism facilities in the area. It is also expected to reduce reliance on unsafe water sources, improving hygiene and public health while supporting local businesses and household welfare.
