URSB Takes Innovation Lessons to Olive School as Young Minds Explore Power of Intellectual Property
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has taken its innovation and intellectual property awareness campaign to The Olive School in Namugongo, engaging learners whose school projects are already exploring solutions in health, wellness and nutrition. The engagement was held under the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) K–12 Project, bringing together young innovators, expert mentors and URSB officials to help learners understand how ideas can be developed beyond the classroom.
The learners were guided on ways of strengthening their innovations and protecting the ideas they create. They were also introduced to the importance of intellectual property in ensuring that creative work can be properly recognised and developed.Among the projects presented by the learners were ideas addressing health support, wellness and nutrition. The projects provided an opportunity for the young innovators to demonstrate how they can use creativity to identify challenges and develop possible solutions.URSB used the engagement to encourage learners to view their school projects not simply as academic assignments, but as ideas that can potentially be improved and transformed into practical innovations with wider applications.
The expert mentors also shared guidance aimed at helping the learners understand the journey from developing an idea to protecting it and exploring opportunities to commercialise it where appropriate. The programme supports URSB’s Intellectual Property in Schools Initiative, which seeks to introduce intellectual property concepts to learners at an early age and encourage a stronger culture of creativity and innovation in schools.
The engagement at The Olive School highlighted the potential of Uganda’s young innovators and the importance of giving them the knowledge and mentorship needed to develop their ideas. Through such initiatives, URSB and its partners are working to nurture intellectual property awareness from the classroom and encourage young people to see innovation as a pathway to creating solutions for society.
