Efforts to improve access to safe and reliable water in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement have received a fresh boost following a joint assessment by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).The joint team visited the settlement to assess the existing water supply systems and identify challenges that need to be addressed before the infrastructure is formally handed over to NWSC.

The assessment is intended to ensure that the systems are in suitable condition to support sustainable water services.During the exercise, the officials examined the existing infrastructure and discussed possible ways of closing the gaps affecting water access in the settlement. Their discussions focused on strengthening the systems so that refugees and host communities can have improved access to clean and safe water. The assessment comes as plans are being developed to invest in the existing water infrastructure. The proposed interventions are expected to strengthen the capacity of the systems and address weaknesses that could affect the consistent supply of water to residents.Improving water quality is also among the key priorities identified by the partners. The planned interventions are expected to support better treatment and management of water, helping to ensure that the water supplied to the settlement meets the required safety standards. The partners are also looking at measures that can expand and improve access to water for people living in the settlement.

Reliable access to clean water remains essential for households, schools, health facilities and other institutions serving the refugee community. The planned handover to NWSC is expected to provide an opportunity for stronger management and continued investment in the water systems.

Through its mandate, NWSC will be expected to support the sustainability and improvement of water services once the necessary gaps have been addressed. The latest assessment demonstrates the continued cooperation between NWSC, OPM and UNHCR in improving water and sanitation services for vulnerable communities. As preparations for investment and handover continue, the partners remain focused on ensuring that Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement moves closer to having dependable access to clean and safe water for all.
