Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has announced plans to expand and improve school infrastructure across the city as part of its Smart City Agenda aimed at creating better learning environments for children. The Authority revealed that it will construct more than 20 new classrooms during the 2024/2025 financial year to address challenges such as overcrowding and limited learning spaces in government-aided schools.

KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka said education remains a key component of the city’s development strategy, alongside technology, infrastructure growth, and improving the quality of life for Kampala residents.Kampala currently has 79 government-aided primary schools and 22 government-aided secondary schools managed by KCCA, all providing free universal education in line with national education policies. The increasing number of learners has created pressure on existing facilities, prompting the Authority to invest in additional classrooms, renovations, and other improvements to support quality education.During the 2023/2024 financial year, KCCA implemented several projects that benefited more than 30 schools through renovations, construction of classroom blocks, and general infrastructure upgrades. The improvements were aimed at reducing congestion, enhancing safety, and creating more conducive environments for both learners and teachers.KCCA also secured 1.685 acres of land for Kasubi Family Primary School to allow future expansion and development of additional facilities. To improve daily learning conditions, the Authority distributed 150 desks to 10 schools and carried out major works at Kololo Secondary School, including asbestos removal, remodeling, and expansion of classroom and laboratory facilities.

As part of the next phase of development, Nakivubo Primary School is set to receive a nine-classroom block, while Mpererwe Primary School will benefit from a six-classroom block.Kasubi Family Primary School will also receive a new nine-classroom block together with perimeter fencing to improve security around the school.Beyond primary education, KCCA plans to construct a seed secondary school in Kawempe Division and undertake major renovations at Kyambogo College School. The Authority said the investments are aimed at strengthening education infrastructure and supporting the creation of a safer, smarter, and more inclusive Kampala city.
