Greater Kampala Set for Major Water Supply Boost as NWSC Rolls Out Massive Katosi Network Expansion
A major transformation of the water supply system in Greater Kampala is underway as the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) moves to expand its distribution network and bring more reliable water services to communities across Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and neighbouring areas. The development is part of Package 2B of the Rehabilitation, Restructuring, Rezoning and Extension of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Water Supply Network Project, popularly referred to as the Katosi Distribution Network Expansion.
The project is expected to play a crucial role in connecting more consumers to the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, a modern facility designed to produce more than 240 million litres of water every day. The additional production capacity is intended to help bridge supply shortages as demand continues to rise across the metropolitan area.NWSC says the expansion programme includes approximately 71 kilometres of new transmission mains, three water reservoirs and two booster stations.
The corporation is also upgrading its SCADA system to enhance real-time monitoring and control of the increasingly complex water distribution network.Among the most significant works is a 7.7-kilometre DN 1000 pipeline, which is targeted for completion in January 2027. The new line will strengthen supply to several fast-growing communities, including Namugongo, Kira, Buwaate, Bulindo, Mulawa and Kasangati, as well as surrounding areas. The project will also deliver booster stations at Kungu and Kabulengwa, alongside new reservoirs at Kanyanya, Mutungo and Kabulengwa. The facilities will help increase storage, improve the movement of water through the network and provide greater stability during periods of high demand.
The investment comes as Greater Kampala undergoes rapid urban growth, with expanding residential and commercial developments placing enormous pressure on existing infrastructure. NWSC is designing the expanded system to accommodate the region’s projected water needs through 2040.
With construction progressing across different components, residents are expected to begin seeing greater benefits as key sections are completed. NWSC says the expansion will bring Katosi’s increased production closer to consumers and create a stronger, more dependable water distribution system capable of serving Greater Kampala for years to come.
