The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has inspected ongoing works under a major water supply project expected to extend access to reliable water in several communities across Greater Kampala and neighbouring districts.

NWSC Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services, Eng. Johnson Amayo, inspected construction activities under Package 2B of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water Supply Network Project along the Kira–Namugongo–Nsasa corridor.

During the inspection, Amayo directed the contractor to ensure that all areas affected by construction are properly restored to their original condition once the works are completed.

The project aims to rehabilitate, restructure, rezone and expand the existing water distribution network to meet the growing demand for water in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono and Buikwe districts.

It is also expected to address distribution challenges that have prevented communities from fully benefiting from the production capacity of the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, which can produce up to 160 million litres of water per day.

According to the project details, Katosi currently operates at approximately 52 per cent of its capacity because of historical distribution bottlenecks. The new infrastructure is expected to ease these challenges and improve the delivery of water to rapidly growing residential areas.

Several communities in Wakiso District are among those expected to benefit. These include Bugembegembe, Kayunga, Wakiso Town, Kasengeje, Gombe, Mende, Nkoowe, Kasa Ngombe, Sala, Sanda Kavumba, Mpunga, Namasanga, Buyera, Muyomba, Kikokiro, Kapeke, Kiwazi, Kisimbiri, Kabowa, Najjemba, Nakasuga, Namusera, Kyoga and Banda.

In the Kakiri area, the project is expected to extend improved water supply to Kikumbampa, Sebi, Kigaga, Kakiri Town, Mpegwe, Nakyelongosa, Kambe, Nadangira, Kitereede, Busujja, Nonve, Naguru, Buwanuka, Vugamira and Bukalango.

The Gayaza branch is expected to cover Kasangati Town Council, Bulumu, Kiwamulimu, Namavundu, Kayebe, Kyankima, Kitegomba, Gitta, Nabutaka, Nalusoga, Buwagga, Bukemba, Majijje and Wampewo.

Under the Nansana branch, the expected beneficiaries include Wamala, Katooke A and B, Gganda Nasere, Nsumbi, Kawoko, Kabulengwa, Kireka Biira, Nakabugo, Kyebando, Kabumbi, Yesu Amala, Naluvule, Ssenge, Masiitowa, Mutuyanye, parts of Nabweru and Kibwa.

The Kanyanya branch is expected to improve water distribution in Kanyanya, Kiyanja, Tula Road, Kakungulu, Mpererwe, Namasole, Mugalu and Mwaze. Meanwhile, the Luteete branch will cover Namere Road, Katalemwa Estate, Komamboga, Kitala, Kanyanya Road, Kanyanya Hill, Kyanja, Nameere, Kiteezi, Lusanja, Masooli, Kitetika, Nangabo, Bamba, Bumbu, Kitagobwa and Nakanaku.

Other areas expected to benefit under the Matugga branch include Kiryagonja, Lwadda, Matugga, Buwuzzume, Kungu, Kito, Kirwanira, Lwadda B, Kabunza, Katalemwa, Wattuba, Namalele, Kikajjo Kabaga, Kiteezi, Nekyesanja, Kitagobwa, Lubatu, Kabaganda, Wabitembe Kayanga, Jjokolera, Kiti Mayirikiti, Katta, Mawule, Valley View and Green Estates, Jomayi, Kawanda, Kagoma Kanyogoga, Kivuru, Nkonjeru Mubende, Mabanda Kisimu and Maganjo.

The project, which started in February 2025, involves the installation of approximately 70 kilometres of transmission pipelines, construction of new reservoirs and installation of booster stations to improve water distribution across the project areas.

Full completion is scheduled for 2027, with some sections expected to begin delivering improved water supply towards the end of 2026.

The project is expected to strengthen the water distribution network, reduce supply constraints and enable more communities across Greater Kampala and surrounding districts to benefit from the available water production capacity.
