The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has urged university students to be more careful about the information they encounter and share online, encouraging them to verify facts, think critically and use digital platforms responsibly. The message was delivered as Season 4 of the Ultimate University Quiz got underway.

The Commission was among the partners that took part in an orientation session at the International Business, Science and Technology University (ISBAT University) in Kampala. The gathering brought together students, organisers and partners as preparations for the latest season of the competition moved forward. The Ultimate University Quiz gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge while also developing skills that are important both at university and beyond. Through the competition, participants are encouraged to strengthen their critical thinking, communication abilities and confidence.

Representing UCC at the orientation, James Tumusiime, Manager of Public and International Relations, stressed the need for young people to understand their responsibilities when using communication and digital services. He encouraged students to make responsible decisions both online and offline.Tumusiime asked students to develop a culture of questioning information rather than accepting everything they see or hear as true. He encouraged them to confirm the accuracy of information before sharing it, particularly at a time when social media and other digital platforms have become major sources of information. He also reminded the students that their online activities can leave behind a lasting digital footprint.

He urged them to carefully consider the content they post, share or associate themselves with, noting that what remains online can potentially affect their future opportunities even after they leave university. The orientation comes ahead of another season of the quiz, which seeks to combine academic competition with practical skills needed in today’s digital environment. Apart from testing students’ knowledge, the programme provides a space for participants to interact, exchange ideas and build confidence in communicating their views.

The initiative is supported by partners including the Bank of Uganda, New Vision, Uganda Revenue Authority and Turkish Airlines. Through its participation, UCC continues to promote responsible digital citizenship, encouraging young people to use technology wisely while developing the critical thinking skills needed to navigate today’s fast-changing information environment.
