13 Lamwo Schools Left Reeling After Storms Destroy Classrooms, MP Sounds Alarm
Lamwo County MP Hon. Nyeko Johnson has sounded the alarm over the deteriorating state of education in Lamwo District after storms damaged classrooms in more than 13 schools, leaving learners without adequate facilities.
Nyeko told Parliament on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, that several schools have been struggling since March, when powerful storms destroyed or blew away classroom structures. He said the affected facilities have not yet been fully restored, creating serious challenges for both learners and teachers.
According to the legislator, the continued lack of functional classrooms is disrupting lessons and exposing children to difficult learning conditions. He urged the Government to respond to the situation with the urgency normally accorded to other major disasters.
Nyeko warned that allowing the problem to persist could have long-term consequences for children in the affected communities. He appealed for immediate measures to restore the damaged structures and ensure learners return to safe and conducive classrooms.
The MP further raised concerns about school attendance, saying he had mobilised more than 200 students for a scholarship programme intended to support children to stay in school. However, only around 60 students turned up, highlighting the difficulties surrounding access to education in the area.
He said the low participation should prompt renewed efforts to identify and address the challenges discouraging children from attending school. Nyeko stressed that keeping children in school requires combined efforts from Government, communities and other stakeholders.
He commended Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja for her response to the storm disaster but urged her to involve the Ministry of Education and Sports in finding a lasting solution. Nyeko said disaster relief should be followed by the reconstruction of schools to prevent prolonged interruptions to learning.
Ngariam County MP Hon. Peter Ogwang said he would visit Lamwo to establish the extent of the damage, despite Cabinet being in recess. He promised to follow up on the matter after assessing the affected schools, as pressure mounts on the Government to restore classrooms and protect education services in the district.
