Equity Bank Uganda has strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability after revealing that it has disbursed UGX 37.6 billion in green loans to support climate finance initiatives, as the country continues to explore ways of building a more sustainable and resilient economy. The bank also highlighted its investment in clean-energy solutions, demonstrating the growing role of financial institutions in supporting Uganda’s transition towards a green economy.
The bank shared the progress following its participation as a sponsor and partner of the 3rd CEOs’ Breakfast Meeting and High-Level Dialogue on Green Economy, Sustainability and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting took place at the UNICEF Conference Centre in Mbuya under the theme, “Accelerating Uganda’s Green Economy Transition Through Digital Transformation,” bringing together government officials, private sector leaders and development partners to discuss practical approaches to sustainable development.
During the engagement, Equity Bank Uganda Managing Director Gift Shoko highlighted the importance of sustainable financing in accelerating Uganda’s green transition. He pointed to the bank’s ongoing efforts to support climate finance and expand access to clean-energy solutions, emphasising the role financial institutions can play in promoting environmentally responsible economic activities.
One of the major figures highlighted by the bank was the UGX 37.6 billion disbursed in green loans for climate finance. The financing reflects the bank’s contribution to supporting initiatives aimed at advancing environmental sustainability and helping businesses and other eligible borrowers access funding for activities that support a greener economy.
Beyond green lending, Equity Bank Uganda revealed that it has supported the sale of 157,035 clean-energy products. The initiative demonstrates its efforts to expand access to alternative energy solutions, which can help households and businesses adopt more sustainable energy practices while contributing to the country’s broader environmental goals.
The bank also disclosed that UGX 4.75 billion in green finance funds had been provided through a partnership with the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC). The collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and energy-sector organisations in mobilising resources to support clean-energy investments and make sustainable financing more accessible.
The high-level dialogue provided a platform for leaders from different sectors to examine how digital transformation, innovation and strategic partnerships can accelerate Uganda’s green economy transition. The discussions also highlighted the need to turn sustainability commitments into practical solutions that promote economic growth, strengthen climate resilience and create lasting benefits for communities.
Equity Bank Uganda reaffirmed that partnerships, innovation and sustainable financing remain central to its vision of supporting a greener and more resilient future for the country. Through its green lending initiatives, clean-energy support and collaboration with key institutions, the bank is positioning sustainable finance as an important part of Uganda’s development journey, with the message that meaningful environmental progress requires collective action and long-term investment.
