The meeting also focused on the continuing disagreement between medical interns and the government over allowances, working conditions and financial support during internship.

Museveni questioned why students whose education had been sponsored by parents, individuals or institutions would lose that support during their one-year internship after receiving assistance throughout five years of medical training.

However, he said the issue remained open for discussion and that the government would have to balance the welfare of medical interns with its financial capacity. The President announced that the government would pay Shs2 million in allowances this year while discussions on the wider question of intern remuneration continued.

The dispute over allowances has remained a major concern in Uganda’s health sector. In 2021, Museveni announced that medical interns would receive Shs2.5 million monthly, but the government later reduced the amount to Shs1 million, citing financial constraints.
