The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has highlighted the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for demonstrating the growing importance of national identification in Uganda’s tax administration system.URA was among the institutions that participated in the #MyIdentityExpoAndSymposium26, using the platform to engage citizens and explain how the National Identification Number (NIN) is increasingly becoming connected to tax services.A major development came in September 2026 when Cabinet approved the use of the NIN issued by NIRA as the primary Tax Identification Number for individual taxpayers, paving the way for a major shift in taxpayer identification.

Under the new arrangement, existing Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) will be mapped to NINs as the country moves towards a more integrated approach to identifying individual taxpayers. The change is expected to create a stronger connection between Uganda’s national identification system and tax administration, while helping improve the accuracy and consistency of taxpayer information.Through its presence at the expo, URA gave citizens an opportunity to learn first-hand about the changes and understand what the transition from the traditional TIN system to NIN-based identification means for individual taxpayers.

The engagement also helped demonstrate how the National ID, which is already an important document for accessing many services, is taking on an increasingly important role within Uganda’s tax administration.NIRA’s recognition of URA at the expo underscores the importance of collaboration between the two institutions as Uganda continues to build an integrated identity and tax administration system designed to make public services more efficient and easier to access.
