Kamuntu Gives NIRA Leadership Final Warning Over Corruption Allegations
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Ephraim Kamuntu, has issued a stern warning to senior officials at the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) over reported corruption complaints within the institution.
Kamuntu made the remarks on Tuesday while presiding over the opening of the first-ever NIRA Expo Symposium held at the authority’s headquarters in Kololo, Kampala.
The Minister said his office had continued receiving complaints about alleged corrupt practices at NIRA, urging the institution’s top management to take immediate steps to address the concerns.
“I am receiving several complaints of corruption at NIRA, so I am giving the last warning to NIRA bosses,” Kamuntu said.
He warned that officials who fail to improve the situation could face arrest and prosecution if found culpable of wrongdoing.
“Put your house in order, otherwise you will be arrested and prosecuted,” he cautioned.
Kamuntu further emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within NIRA, saying the authority plays a critical role in national security, citizen identification and government planning.
The Minister also revealed that government is preparing to expand NIRA’s operations in the coming years to make registration services more accessible to Ugandans.
He said the authority will introduce new measures aimed at ensuring that all eligible citizens are registered and included in the national identification system.
Kamuntu added that strengthening NIRA’s systems will help improve service delivery and ensure the country has a reliable database for planning and development.
