The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Public Sector Office has engaged officials of Kiryandongo Local Government in an effort to strengthen tax compliance and address gaps identified in the local government’s tax records. The engagement is aimed at helping officials better understand their tax responsibilities, improve the accuracy of returns and ensure that payments are properly declared and made.

URA says accurate tax information is important in maintaining clear and reliable tax records.Sandra Namatovu, Supervisor at the URA Public Sector Office, Public Sector Local Government, said Kiryandongo Local Government has generally demonstrated proper and consistent tax payment. However, she noted that some issues remain regarding incorrect return details and payments.According to Namatovu, addressing such discrepancies is important because inaccurate information can create challenges during reconciliation and may affect the proper reflection of an institution’s tax compliance position.

The URA team is using the engagement to take officials through their compliance history while providing guidance on areas where improvements are needed. The discussions are also giving local government officials an opportunity to seek clarification on different tax obligations. The officials are being updated on recent tax amendments and other URA initiatives intended to improve compliance and make it easier for taxpayers to meet their obligations correctly and on time.

URA has encouraged Kiryandongo Local Government officials to pay close attention to the information submitted in their tax returns and ensure that the corresponding payments are correctly made. This, the authority says, will help minimise discrepancies and make reconciliation of tax records easier. The engagement is part of URA’s continued efforts to work with public institutions and local governments through tax education and compliance support. The authority is encouraging institutions to maintain accurate tax records and promptly address any errors to avoid future compliance challenges.
