NWSC Restores Water Supply After Successful Katosi Treatment Plant Upgrade Works
Residents in Kampala, Mukono, and surrounding areas have started receiving normal water supply again after the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) completed major upgrade and maintenance works at the Katosi Water Treatment Plant. The restoration follows a temporary shutdown of the facility that affected thousands of homes, businesses, schools, and institutions that depend on the plant for their daily water needs.
The shutdown was carried out to allow engineers to conduct critical system upgrades and routine maintenance aimed at improving the plant’s efficiency and strengthening water supply reliability. In an update issued on Saturday, May 23, 2026, NWSC confirmed that the rehabilitation works had been successfully completed and that recovery efforts were underway to return the distribution network to normal operations.NWSC explained that technical teams immediately began restoring supply by charging pipelines with water, removing trapped air from the network, and stabilising pressure levels across the affected areas. The corporation noted that restoring water supply after a complete plant shutdown requires a gradual process to ensure the system operates safely and efficiently.
The interruption affected several areas, including Katosi, Kisoga, Mukono, Seeta, Mbalala, Namugongo, Namanve, Sonde, parts of Kireka, Kamuli, Kyaliwajala, Bulindo, Nsasa, Mulawa, Naalya, Ntinda, Kisaasi, Najeera, Luteete, Gayaza, parts of Kamwokya, Mbuya, and neighbouring communities. Many residents had raised concerns over the prolonged shortage, with households, health facilities, schools, restaurants, and businesses facing challenges due to the lack of reliable water access.
NWSC said the completed upgrade works will improve the plant’s operational capacity, enhance the stability of the water distribution network, and support increasing demand in the rapidly growing urban areas of Kampala and Mukono. The corporation reaffirmed its commitment to investing in infrastructure improvements to deliver better and more reliable water services to customers. As supply continues to normalise, NWSC has encouraged customers to remain patient while the system fully stabilises and urged residents to report any areas that continue experiencing water challenges.
