NWSC Unveils Shs8.2 Trillion Plan To Expand Water Access To 26 Million Ugandans By 2030
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has announced an ambitious expansion plan aimed at increasing access to clean and safe water for millions of Ugandans by 2030.The corporation’s five-year strategy, covering the period from 2025 to 2030, is backed by an estimated Shs8.2 trillion investment plan focused on expanding water infrastructure, increasing connections, and improving service delivery across the country.
According to NWSC leadership, Shs6.8 trillion of the required funding has already been secured, while efforts are ongoing to mobilise additional resources through government support and partnerships with international development organisations.Under the plan, NWSC targets increasing the number of water connections from slightly above one million to nearly 1.3 million within five years. The expansion is expected to extend reliable water services to about six million additional people, raising the total number of beneficiaries to approximately 26 million by 2030.To achieve this target, the corporation plans to establish at least 60,000 new water connections annually while extending its pipeline network by about 500 kilometres each year. The strategy will also focus on expanding safe water points in thousands of communities, particularly in areas where residents still face challenges accessing clean and affordable water.
NWSC has highlighted the progress made in recent years, noting that Uganda’s water distribution network has significantly expanded since 2017, with national water coverage increasing from about half of the population to more than four-fifths.Despite these achievements, challenges remain, especially in remote areas where communities continue to experience limited access and higher costs for water services compared to urban centres.
Some communities still depend on unsafe water sources, including shared ponds used by both people and livestock, creating health risks and increasing the spread of water-related diseases.Beyond expanding coverage, NWSC faces operational challenges such as water losses caused by leakages, illegal connections, and vandalism of infrastructure. Addressing these issues will be critical to ensuring sustainable water supply as the corporation works toward its 2030 goal. With the planned investments and continued partnerships, NWSC says it aims to transform Uganda’s water sector and bring reliable access to millions more citizens across the country.
